Walking

Whether you want just a one hour walk or to make Kathleens your base for a week’s walking, Kathleen will provide you with self guided maps. She delights in sharing her local knowledge of her own favourite pasttime with you.

Killarney is a walker’s paradise with Killarney National Park  just a few minutes from Kathleens.

This is Ireland’s largest national park containing  Ireland’s most spectacular mountains, woodlands and lakes. It encompasses 25,000 acres which include the famous Lakes of Killarney, Knockreer Estate, Ross Castle, Muckross Abbey and Muckross House.

The combination of mountains, and valleys, lakes and islands, rivers, waterfalls, bogs and woodlands forges a distinctive and beautiful landscape. The lakes lie sandwiched between the mountains of the McGillicuddy's Reeks and lower agricultural lands North and East of Killarney. The lower slopes of  mountains surrounding the lakes are covered by deciduous oak woods which are an essential component to the Killarney national park

Hiking in Killarney

Kathleens location is ideal for hiking enthusiasts. Killarney is surrounded by 25,000 acres of National Park, lakes and magnificent Mountain Ranges including Ireland's highest peak, Carrantuohill (c1040 m).

Whether you wish to trek to the top of Irelands highest mountain range, explore Killarney's ancient woodland glens and valleys or just stroll around its beautiful lakeshore walks, Killarney offers you a range of walks in unspoilt wilderness that will never cease to amaze and please you.

Route maps and Pocket Guides are available for the recognised established routes, but Killarney offers the pleasure of numerous walking options that are still very much in their undiscovered state, presenting the walker with the opportunity to explore and discover.

The Cork/Kerry Region features endless ranges for the Longer Distance walks of mountains and an incredibly indented coastline. For many years walkers have enjoyed exploring this terrain. There is nearly 1,000 kilometres of developed Long Distance Walking Routes in the Cork/Kerry Region.

Carrauntuohill - 1,040 metres, Ireland's highest mountain is located near Killarney in County Kerry. Walkers have a great opportunity to see the colour and grandeur of the spectacular scenery in the Region, the changes between towns and the countryside, between the valleys and the mountains, and between the surging seas, beaches and cliffs.

Horse Riding & Jaunting Cars

Killarney offers a wide choice of equestrian options from organised riding and treks with one of its many Equestrian Centres to the less formal mountain rides through the magnificent Gap of Dunloe.

Killarney Riding Stables offers hacking, treking & trail riding in Killarney National Park. Rides take in views of Ross Castle & Ross Island and beautiful views of the Killarney lakes and mountains.

Killarney is of course world famous for it’s traditional "Irish Jaunting Car" and the endless wealth of magical local stories and folklore told by Killarney's Jarveys.
Jaunting on many different routes with  jaunting car stands in Killarney Town, Muckross House and Torc Waterfall.

Bicycling

Killarney has numerous lakeside and forest pathways, trails, and roads. This is a paradise for bikers.

O'Sullivan's Rent a Bike & Outdoor Store  have a wide range of bicycles for hire to suit all tastes whether you're interested in exploring the nearby National Park for a day or planning a week-long excursion around Kerry.
